Rochester Field Target

@Rochester Brooks Gun Club
Golf (Field Target) is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated;
it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect.
It is at the same time rewarding and maddening -
and it is without a doubt the greatest game
mankind has ever invented.
-Arnold Palmer

The game is simple...

The game is simple... Load a pellet, determine the range, shoot, and hope the target falls, but it's so much more than that. You're outside for many hours at a time, it's a family sport, it's a highly social activity, it's complicated yet simple, it's challenging and gratifying.

The concept is simple. The pellet has a trajectory much like a baseball, so you have to figure out where along that arc the pellet is going to hit the target. So we either adjust the scope to match the distance by moving the cross-hairs up or down or we can aim at a different point on the scope using aiming points on the scope reticle.

Once you "think" you have that down then you start incorporating wind, heat/cold, and your own comfort. The wind is going to affect that pellet more than you think. There are times when you have the cross-hairs 6" to the side of where the pellet will hit at 55 yards. And then you have the heat/cold that will affect everything around you as well as you, yourself. If you're hot/cold/hungry/thirsty it affects your shooting.

It's a family/social thing because it's a quiet sport that can be enjoyed by everyone, young or old(er). There's no recoil from PCP rifles and small recoil from Pistons. And if you're shooting for 3-5 hours on a given day what better way to spend time with family and friends doing what you love and having some great conversations along the way.

I often joke of the "rabbit hole" and how you decide just how far you want to go down it. It's there and some try the sport and fall deeply into the hole while others stay near the top. It all depends on just how much you enjoy the sport. The better you get the more you want to learn the more you dig into the complexities the deeper you go down the hole. And there are so many options...you can remain a shooter, or become a monthly match director, start teaching kids, arrange big events, travel the world... It's all possible with field target.

And then you have the challenge and gratification. No two courses are the same and the more you shoot, the more you learn, the more you are challenged. And the more you grow, as a field target shooter, the more you are gratified by the shots you make that you used to consider hard or frustrating.

And finally you have the elusive "perfect match". Sort of a pinnacle for a field target shooter. At the beginning it's getting good enough to beat some, then place at a monthly match, then it might be the high-score of a match, then it's placing at a grand-prix, high-score at a grand-prix, and then there's the elusive "perfect match" -- when you shoot a match and don't miss a single target. If any one of these happen you tend to remember it because it's a point in time when you realize that you have improved from yesterday/last week/last month/last year... And, yes, it could be that you had an exceptional day and someone else didn't, but a win is a win, just like a target falling counts even if the pellet hit the faceplate and the target really shouldn't have fallen.

Come out and join us when you have the time and try this wonderful sport.
