Monthly field target matches @ RBGC

Picture
Monthly field target matches are held at Rochester Brooks Gun Club from May through November typically on the third Saturday of each month.
Interested, but not sure where to start? Contact us. We have equipment you can borrow or we can pair you up with another shooter. In fact we ENCOURAGE you to do this so that you don't waste your money on equipment that doesn't work or isn't what you need.
Kids interested? Bring them along. There isn't an age limit, but more of an attention requirement. A match requires good focus for at least 6 minutes at a time. If they can do that then all you have to do is stay close to assure safety.

Not your father's airgun

Modern air rifles and pistols are NOT what your father used to shoot. Today's airguns are extremely accurate and typically shoot from 700-950 feet per second, well below the speed of sound. Contrary to what you see at the box stores the faster an airgun shoots the LOUDER and LESS accurate it is.

This is a Thomas Field Target Rifle. Made in the USA and extremely accurate.

Pellets, pellets and more pellets...

Pellets are just as important as the gun. When someone gets a new gun the first thing they do is try every pellet they can get their hands on to determine which pellet is the most accurate in that particular rifle barrel. Sometimes you find that two "identical" rifles like different pellets, because each rifle has a unique barrel.
Even pellets need to be inspected and possibly cleaned. For ultimate precision some people sort their pellets by head/skirt size and weight. All for that little bit of extra accuracy.

Dirty, but it's brand new!?
So your brand-new airgun has a clean barrel, right? WRONG! Any gun barrel is typically sold to you dirty as can be with all sorts of remnants from manufacturing, shipping, and protectants. On top of that you will need to clean your barrel if the accuracy starts to fall. After you've been shooting your gun for a while you will start to see when this happens.
There are all sorts of things that affect the accuracy of an airgun and the more you get into the sport the more that you will dig into these areas.

Targets in the woods, oh my

We have two areas where matches are shot, one is in the field where you have to battle the Rochester winds, the other is in the woods where you have to plan your shots carefully and have a harder time judging distance.
Picture

Standing...it's tough

Standing is the toughest lane to shoot and is the least favorite, but there is ALWAYS at least 1 standing lane per course.

Kneeling...not as bad

Kneeling is tough and you always have the option to shoot standing. There is always at least 1 kneeling lane per course.
