Several people contact me each year asking for more information about our 4H Firearm Safety course that we offer so I'd like to try and provide as much information (maybe too much at times) for you.
Currently the course is $25 and you can contact Susan @ smc226@cornell.edu to register. Once the payment has been made your spot is secured.
First off, we use air rifles for all of our training which provides several advantages. First, we can start teaching kids as young as 9am proper firearm safety. Air rifles are extremely quiet and have no recoil, so no need to wear ear protection and no sore shoulders. Ammunition is incredibly cheap, approximately $15/500 pellets, and we have our own air compressor to charge the rifles which then offers 30-60 shots before having to charge again.
We started out shooting indoors at paper targets, which works out great, but we wanted to get kids outside so we're now holding our classes in the early spring at Rochester Brooks Gun Club, in Rush, NY. While we start with paper, we wanted to quickly get the kids shooting field targets. We can do that easier at Rochester Brooks as we have plenty of room to shoot in the fields or in the woods depending on the weather. Field Targets are small steel targets designed to fall when a paddle is hit cleanly with the pellet. Once the target falls it takes just a gentle string pull to reset the target for another shot. Being outdoors, and being able to shoot at longer distances also means that we can teach about bullet trajector and the effect of wind on the projectile.
Getting into the field target format provides a great foundation to continue shooting their entire life, and can be enjoyed by entire families.
We encourage parents to try out the sport alongside their kids and we will help you do that. The kids enjoy being able to show their parents how to handle firearms safely and get the biggest kick when they outshoot their parents.
If you would like more information about the course please feel free to contact Sean McDaniel @ smcdaniel@TheQuartzGroup.com, or by phone at (585) 363-4616.
